Luca's double life in Testaccio, Rome: labor man by day sax player by night

Luca’s double life in Testaccio, Rome: labor man by day sax player by night.

Luca De Santis, a 27-year-old from a small town near Rome, has always lived between two worlds. Born in Marino, a picturesque village on the outskirts of Rome, he grew up in a humble family. His father was a truck driver, and his mother worked in a bakery. From an early age, Luca learned the value of hard work, but he also inherited a love for music from his grandfather, a retired jazz guitarist.

By day, Luca is part of the bustling chaos of Rome’s General Market. Rising at 4 a.m., he spends his mornings hauling crates of fruit and vegetables, his sinewy frame a testament to years of physical labor. The market is alive with noise, laughter, and the sharp cries of vendors, and Luca thrives in its raw energy.
But as the sun sets and the market sleeps, Luca’s other world comes alive. By night, he’s a saxophonist, pouring his soul into every note of his alto sax. Whether in dimly lit pubs, cozy clubs, or rooftop bars, Luca’s music tells stories of dreams, heartbreaks, and the vibrant streets of Rome. His style blends traditional jazz with contemporary influences, earning him a growing reputation among the city’s music lovers.

Once a month, Luca takes center stage at the Testaccio Market’s Saturday night parties. Under the soft glow of market lights, surrounded by the aroma of street food and the hum of excited crowds, he performs solo. These nights are his playground for experimentation, where he pushes boundaries and loses himself in the music. Here, Luca is free—unshackled from routine—and it’s impossible not to notice. His bold improvisations and charismatic presence have caught the attention of many, especially young women who gather to hear him play.

Though Luca’s days are grueling and his nights long, he wouldn’t trade his double life for anything. In the rhythm of the city, he’s found his own—moving crates by morning, moving hearts by night.
